How to Choose Jersey Sizes: Measurements and Team Size Distribution Guide

How to Choose Jersey Sizes: Measurements and Team Size Distribution Guide

How should a team choose the right jersey size?

A custom jersey size should not be selected only from the S, M or L label used for everyday clothing. Manufacturer patterns, sport-specific movement and relaxed or close-fit preferences can change the result. The safest method is to measure a similar garment that already fits well, compare it with the current product measurements and collect the entire team in one approved roster.

Explore custom jersey designs and review the custom jersey ordering process before finalising the roster.

Why is an everyday clothing size not enough?

  • Patterns can differ between manufacturers.
  • Relaxed and close fits feel different at the same labelled size.
  • A player may need different jersey and shorts sizes.
  • Child sizes should not be selected only by age.
  • Football, basketball and volleyball garments use different proportions.

Which measurements are useful?

MeasurementHow to measureWhy it matters
Chest widthMeasure a flat garment from armpit to armpit.Shows upper-body room.
Garment lengthMeasure from the upper shoulder to the hem.Prevents an excessively short or long jersey.
Shoulder widthMeasure between shoulder joins.Affects movement in sleeved garments.
WaistMeasure the body or a comfortable pair of shorts.Supports shorts selection.
Shorts lengthMeasure from the upper waist to the hem.Supports sport-specific movement and coverage.

Do not stretch the fabric. Do not confuse a flat half-chest width with a full body circumference.

Measure the body or an existing garment?

A similar jersey that already fits well is often easier to compare. Body measurements and garment measurements are not identical because the garment includes movement allowance. If samples are available, test arm raises, running, turning and squatting rather than judging the fit only while standing.

Relaxed fit or close fit?

Fit is a practical decision as well as a visual one. Consider the sport, playing position, fabric stretch and player preference. A close garment should not restrict shoulders or the torso, while an oversized garment should not gather excessively during movement.

Can jersey and shorts sizes be different?

Yes. Upper and lower body proportions differ. Record jersey and shorts sizes in separate columns.

Small teams should still use one master roster. Review the minimum six-piece order guide for quantity planning.

How should children and youth players be sized?

Age alone is not reliable because players of the same age may have different height, chest and body proportions. Record the date of the size list and recheck it if production begins much later. Growth allowance should not make the garment so large that it affects movement.

How does sizing change by sport?

Football and indoor football

Check running movement, arm movement, jersey length, shorts waist and shorts length separately. Review football jersey models.

Basketball

Arm openings, chest width, top length and shorts movement are important. The top should not pull during a defensive stance or raised-arm movement. See basketball uniforms.

Volleyball

Shoulder and torso freedom should be checked during serving, blocking and passing. Jersey, shorts or tights sizes should be recorded separately. Browse volleyball jersey options.

Handball

The shoulders and body need room for throwing and contact without leaving the garment excessively loose. Review handball jersey models.

Goalkeeper

Tell the manufacturer about protective layers or garments worn underneath. Browse goalkeeper jersey options.

How to prepare the team size distribution

  1. List every player and spare garment.
  2. Record jersey and lower-garment sizes separately.
  3. Recheck uncertain players.
  4. Mark goalkeepers and special roles.
  5. Approve every print name and number.
  6. Compare the row count with the order quantity.
  7. Let one representative approve the final version.

Use the name and number placement guide when preparing the artwork.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Treating an everyday T-shirt size as the final jersey size
  • Recording jersey and shorts in one size column
  • Selecting youth sizes only by age
  • Stretching the garment while measuring
  • Using an old roster without checking it
  • Guessing for an uncertain player
  • Leaving a late change in an older file version
  • Failing to match the roster and order totals

Pre-production checklist

  1. Confirm the garment and fit.
  2. Use current measurement guidance.
  3. Check top and lower sizes separately.
  4. Group youth and adult players correctly.
  5. Identify goalkeeper and special-role garments.
  6. Match the player rows and order total.
  7. Approve one final roster.

Frequently asked questions

Is my normal clothing size automatically my jersey size?

No. Compare a comfortable garment with the current product measurements because patterns can differ.

What should I do between two sizes?

Compare chest width and length, state the preferred fit and try a sample where possible.

Can jersey and shorts use different sizes?

Yes. Record them separately according to the player proportions.

Can a child size be selected by age?

Age is only a starting point. Height, chest and an existing garment should also be checked.

Can a size change after production begins?

Changes may not be possible after approved garments enter production. Finalise the roster before technical approval.
